Mr. Secretary General,

During the past thirty years, the civilized world has witnessed continuous violations of human rights by the government of Islamic Republic of Iran and praised the heroic struggle of Iranian people for their basic human rights. As you are aware, since the crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations sparked by the June 12 Coup d’état to illegitimately maintain Ahmadinejad’s presidency, the scope and level of the repression in Iran has intensified.

In commemoration of International Human Rights Day the vast Diaspora of Iranians has become the voice of those jailed, tortured and illegally held in the Islamic Republic prisons. In over twenty cities across the globe from Cologne to Houston, and Montreal to San Francisco, thousands of dissidents gathered to condemn human rights violations in Iran and request the United Nations to take concrete actions protecting the human rights of the Iranian people. As has been recently reflected by the UN human rights council the Iranian regime is of number one concern in violation of human rights in the world.

In light of increasing severity of the violations of human rights and the fact that the lives of several hundreds of those in prison are in danger, we request your Excellency to heed our call by:

1) Appointing a special envoy to lead a fact-finding mission of human rights experts to visit the condition of political prisoners in Iran, inspecting their conditions, investigating claims of torture and meeting with the members of bar association concerning restrictions on their ability to defend their clients.

2) Recommending to UN Human Rights Council the appointment of a special rapporteur to investigate the human rights crisis in Iran.

3) Transmitting urgent appeals-- especially appeals to release all political detainees immediately -- to the Islamic Republic of Iran.
